One jar labeled Down Syndrome (top) appears to contain more than one brain and possibly other internal organs. Many cans are missing labels; little is known about the people whose brains they were.
Some abnormalities are obvious, such as lissencephaly or smooth brain, a neurological disorder that usually leads to premature death. Many brains appear normal on the surface, but autopsy reveals a tumor or hemorrhage.
